Quién es un alcohólico?

Un alcohólico es un individuo que ha perdido la libertad de abstenerse del alcohol, es decir, que tiene una dependencia respecto del alcohol. En esta dependencia es donde radica su enfermedad, independientemente de que ellos sean o no antes enfermos. Mientras no exista esta dependencia no puede hablarse de alcohólico, aunque se sea bebedor en exceso y el individuo presente todas las consecuencias de ese exceso: cirrosis hepática, polineuritis, problemas sociales, económicos, etc.

El consumo de bebidas alcohólicas en las reuniones sociales es frecuente en muchos lugares del mundo, pero puede tener consecuencias sanitarias y sociales negativas relacionadas con sus propiedades tóxicas y la dependencia que puede producir. Además de las enfermedades crónicas que pueden contraer quienes beben grandes cantidades de alcohol a lo largo de varios años, el consumo de alcohol también se asocia a un aumento del riesgo de padecer afecciones agudas, tales como las lesiones, y en particular las provocadas por accidentes de tránsito. 

El tratamiento primario comienza con el reconocimiento del alcoholismo como un problema que necesita atención específica, en vez de considerarlo secundario a otro problema subyacente como se hacía antaño. Los grupos de apoyo son muy importantes y se han desarrollado residencias especializadas para su tratamiento.  Hay unidades específicas en algunos hospitales generales y psiquiátricos para tratar a los alcohólicos integralmente. A medida que la sociedad se conciencia de la verdadera naturaleza del alcoholismo, disminuye su consideración como estigma social, los enfermos y sus familias lo ocultan menos y el diagnóstico no se retrasa tanto. Los tratamientos más precoces y mejores están produciendo unas altas y esperanzadoras tasas de recuperación. 

A pesar de los resultados esperanzadores del tratamiento actual, se estima en más de 100.000 el número de muertos anuales sólo en Estados Unidos a causa del alcohol. En la Federación Rusa un 12 por 100.000 de la población ingresa anualmente en los hospitales para ser tratados de intoxicaciones etílicas agudas.  

A nuestros lectores este mes de Septiembre en Nueva Orleans en donde siempre hay Fiesta, les recordamos que una de las reglas de Oro que deben de regir nuestras vidas es: “Todo, con moderacion” o como decian nuestros abuelos, “Ni tanto que queme al santo; ni tan poco que no lo alumbre.”

Who is an Alcoholic?

An alcoholic is an individual who has lost the freedom to abstain from alcohol, i.e. that has a dependency on alcohol. In this dependency lies his illness, whether he was ill or not before. While there is no dependency we cannot call him an alcoholic even if he drinks in excess and he presents all consequences of this excess: liver cirrhosis, polyneuritis, social, economic problems, etc.

Social gatherings and alcohol consumption is common in many parts of the world, but it can have health implications and social denials related to its toxic properties and can cause dependence. In addition to the chronic diseases that heavy drinkers can obtain over the years, alcohol use is also associated with increased risk of acute conditions such as injuries, and in particular those caused by traffic accidents.

Primary treatment begins with the recognition of alcoholism as a problem that needs specific attention, rather than considering it a secondary issue to another underlying, old problem. Support groups are very important and have developed specialized treatment residences. There are specific units in some general and psychiatric hospitals for treating alcoholics integrally. As society becomes aware of the true nature of alcoholism and lowers its consideration as a social stigma, the sick and their families hide it less and the diagnosis is not delayed. Early and better treatments are producing a high and hopeful recovery rates.

In spite of the encouraging results of current treatment, it is estimated that there are more than 100,000 annual deaths only in the United States because of alcohol. In the Russian Federation 12 per 100,000 of the population annually enter the hospital to be treated for alcohol intoxications.

To our readers this month in New Orleans, where there’s always a party being celebrated, we remind you of the Golden rule that should govern our lives, “All, with moderation” or as our grandparents would say, “Try to strike a happy medium.”

Regreso a la Escuela

Todos sabemos que inculcar buenos hábitos es más fácil cuando somos jóvenes, por lo que más y más padres y educadores están trabajando para hacer que los niños sean conscientes de la importancia de cuidar nuestro planeta. Cuando los niños se preparen para regresar a la escuela, aquí están algunos consejos simples para fomentar hábitos sostenibles y apoyar un medio ambiente sano …. y niños sanos!

Comience con lo básico. Recuerde a sus hijos apagar las luces del baño o de cualquier habitación desocupada en el hogar y en la escuela. Anímelos a tirar la basura que encuentran en el patio de la escuela, dígales que utilizen ambos lados de su papel de cuaderno, y sugierales que ahorren tiza no utilizada y materiales de arte.

En cuanto a los programas de su escuela de reciclaje. Pregunte si contenedores de reciclaje son accesibles y si a los niños se les anima a utilizarlos. Si es así, asegúrese de que su hijo sepa para reciclar plástico y botellas de vidrio, así como el papel.

Tome decisiones inteligentes al comprar. Compre suministrosescolares con menos embalaje y buscar los fabricados con materiales orgánicos, o que hayan sido reciclados. Considere la posibilidad de invertir en productos más resistentes – esto puede asegurar años de uso de artículos como las mochilas. También puede tomar   decisiones inteligentes al comprar ropa para el regreso a clases.

La reutilización de útiles escolares que se encuentran en buenas condiciones. We all know instilling good habits is easiest when we’re young, so more and more parents and educators are working to make kids aware of the importance of caring for our planet. As kids get ready to return to school, here are some simple tips to encourage sustainable habits and support a healthy environment….and healthy kids!

Start with the basics. Remind kids to turn off the lights in the bathroom or any unoccupied room at home and at school. Encourage them to throw away any trash they find on the school playground, tell them to use both sides of their notebook paper, and suggest that they save unused chalk and art supplies.

Check out your school’s recycling programs. Ask whether recycling bins are accessible and if the kids are encouraged to use them. If they are, be sure your child knows to recycle plastic and glass bottles, as well as paper.

Make smart decisions while shopping. Buy school supplies with less packaging and seek those made with organic materials, or which have been recycled. Consider investing in sturdier products – this can ensure years of use from items like backpacks. You can also make smart decisions when buying back-to-school clothes.

Re-use school supplies that are in good condition. When you’re in the middle of exciting back-to-school shopping, sometimes it’s easy to forget about all the items you already have at home that are still in good working condition. Binders, loose leaf paper, pencils and scissors are often only lightly used. Save money and resources by buying only what’s really needed! If you can’t re-use old products, donate them to your school or daycare.

Carpool. If you live somewhere where bus service isn’t provided, start a carpool and take turns with other parents in the neighborhood to drop off and pick up the kids. You’ll each save time, energy, and fuel.

Junto con Javier, ellos realizan el trabajo de investigar el talento y deciden cuales serán los temas semana a semana.  Javier también es optimista sobre la vida de QPNO. Sobrino del conocida Dr. Guillermo DeBango, quien inspiró a muchos músicos y actores, siente la obligación de mantener viva la memoria de su tío y siente que, con el apoyo de su equipo y de la comunidad, continuarán en el aire. Como dice Javier, “Yo soy disciplinado, responsable y cabecidura” y con esto dicho, no hay duda de que habran más episodios de Que Pasa Nueva Orleans por venir!

Get to Know…Que Pasa New Orleans

Que Pasa New Orleans is a local Spanish-language cultural program that debuted seven months ago on the KGLA Telemundo network.  The fast moving half hour show is created, produced and hosted by a group of dynamic people, all with the common goal of bringing information and exciting multi-cultural events in and around the metro area to the television viewers. Produced by Johnny Marcia and Javier Olondo and co-hosted by Rocio Mora and Felipe Pineda, the show has grown in popularity mostly because of the diversity it provides in its segments with artists, musicians, chefs, and actors—all movers and shakers of the cultural scene in the New Orleans area.  Filmed and edited by William Sabourin O’Reilly, of Cuban heritage, the show is carefully pieced together demonstrating the expertise he brings to the project with his craft. 

“The show is expanding in popularity,” says Rocio, who together with Felipe, co-host the show. “What I like the most is that it has turned me into an explorer of my own city. I’ve lived here most of my life but have never really experienced what New Orleans has to offer until I did my research for the show.” She is of Mexican/Honduran heritage.

Felipe, who is Honduran says, “I’m very proud to represent a prosperous and diverse culture. I’m a spontaneous person and I like to interact with others especially in this city where there is always something different to do.”

Sales manager and producer, Johnny Marcia says that he is proud of what they have all accomplished in such a short time. “New Orleans needed a show like this and we are slowing accomplishing our goal,” he said.  “We’re attracting advertisers which is so crucial to keeping a show like this alive but I have confidence we’ll be here a year from now. Together with Javier, they do the research and decide what the show topics will be week to week.  Javier is also optimistic about the life of QPNO. Nephew of the well known Dr. Guillermo DeBango, who inspired many local musicians and actors, feels an obligation to keeping his uncle’s memory alive and feels that with his team’s support and that of the community, they will continue on. As Javier says, “I’m disciplined, responsible and hardheaded,” and with that said, there is not doubt there will more Que Pasa New Orleans episodes to come!

EarlySteps proporciona servicios a las familias con bebés y niños pequeños desde el nacimiento hasta los tres años (36 meses) que tienen una condición médica que pueda traducirse en un retraso en el desarrollo, o que tienen retrasos en el desarrollo.

¿Quien debe ser referido a EarlySteps?

 La parte C de las Individuals with Disabilities Act, sección 303.16, la ley federal sobre la cual EarlySteps se basa, afirma que los bebés y niños pequeños que tienen una condición física o mental diagnosticada que tiene una alta probabilidad de resultar en retraso en el desarrollo, son elegibles para los servicios. Los niños con retrasos en cognitivo, motor, visión, audición, comunicación, desarrollo social-emocional o adaptación también pueden ser elegibles para los servicios. Si tiene, o sabe de un niño que se ajusta a alguno de estos criterios, deben referir al niño a su punto de sistema local de entrada (SPOE).

Cómo hacer una referencia a EarlySteps

Debe referir a un niño poniendose en contacto con el único punto de entrada (SPOE) en su parroquia. Jefferson teléfono (504) 496-0165, Orleans, San Bernardo, Plaquemines Teléfono (504) 595-3408 y otro parroquia llaman Toll Free 1. 866. 783. 5553 para localizar un puntos de sistema de EarlySteps de la Oficina de entrada (SPOE).

¿Qué sucede después de hacer una remisión a servicios?

 Una vez que la SPOE reciba el formulario de remisión completado, la familia será contactada dentro de cuatro días de comenzar el proceso de determinación de elegibilidad. El niño sera evaluado en primer lugar por cualquier retraso posible en el desarrollo.

Si las áreas de preocupación aparecen, entonces el niño, con el consentimiento de los padres, tendrá una evaluación más amplia de desarrollo. Si el niño cumple con los criterios de elegibilidad de EarlySteps, entonces, la familia seleccionará un coordinador de servicios de la familia y se hará una reunión para desarrollar el IFSP del niño (Individualized Family Service Plan). El IFSP identifica los resultados, estrategias y actividades que conforman el plan de intervención temprana para el niño. Servicios enumerados en el IFSP están autorizados para el pago a través de la Oficina Central de Finanzas (CFO), y cualquier cambio en el IFSP requiere una reunión de todo el equipo IFSP.

Tan sólo hace un par de días, conmemoramos el quinto aniversario del paso del huracán Katrina. El 29 de Agosto, me desperté con emociones encontradas, especialmente mirando por la ventana ese día sombrío y húmedo. Pensé en las almas que Katrina se llevó con ella y recordé mi viaje a través de muchas ciudades y países para sólo volver a mi casa — lo que una vez había sido mi hogar. Recordé a mi abuelo, quien nos había acompañado en nuestra evacuación y cómo él nunca comprendió, debido a su demencia, la magnitud de la catástrofe porque pensaba que estábamos simplemente en unas vacaciones. Hoy, estoy tan agradecido por ello porque él fue probablemente el único en nuestra familia que no fue afectado emocionalmente por toda la inestabilidad y fue capaz de vivir sus últimos años, sin mencionar el nombre de Katrina. He pensado en cómo en ese momento, tuve que vivir día a día y estaba asustada incluso de pensar en el futuro. Pensé en el día que finalmente pude dormir en mi casa nuevamente y di gracias a Dios porque aunque sentía ausente mi cordura, otros estaban sufriendo mas por haber regresado a sólo los restos de sus casas y a muchas decepciones. Pensé en todos aquellos que pasaron un mal rato en el Superdome y en el centro de convenciones, a la espera de autobuses para venir a rescatarlos y cómo viendo esas imágenes en la televisión, habría pensado que eran personas en un país del tercer mundo en lugar de los Estados Unidos. Por último, he pensado cómo cinco años más tarde, he recorrido un largo camino y puedo nuevamente concentrarme en el futuro. Hoy en día, cuando veo las fleur de lis en mi casa, pienso como antes era sólo un nombre de una calle, una decoración y esa “cosa” en los cascos de los Santos. Ahora esas fleur de lis representan la resistencia, la resurrección, la familia, la fe y una nación entera de Who Dats! ¿Qué les parece?

So just a couple of days ago, we commemorated the five year anniversary of hurricane Katrina. On August 29, I woke up with mixed emotions, especially looking out the window on that gloomy and wet day. I thought of the souls Katrina took with her and carefully traced back my journey through many cities and countries to just get back to my house—what had once been my home. I thought about my grandfather who had accompanied us on our evacuation and how he never comprehended the magnitude of the disaster because he thought we were simply on a vacation due to his dementia. Today, I’m so grateful for that because he was probably the only one in our family who was not emotionally affected by all the instability and was able to live out his last years without even mentioning the name Katrina. I thought about how at that time, I had to live day to day and was scared to even think about the future. I thought about the day I finally was able to sleep in my house again and gave thanks to God because although I felt robbed of my sanity, others were worse off than me having returned to only slab foundations and ongoing disappointments. I thought of all those who spent time in the Superdome and Convention Center waiting for buses to come rescue them and how looking at those images on television, you would have thought you were looking at people in a third world country instead of the United States. Finally, I thought of how five years later, I’ve come a long way and can think of the future again. Today, as I look at my fleur de lis all over my house, I think about how once it was just a street name, a decoration and that “thing” on the Saints’ helmet. These days, it represents resilience, resurrection, family, faith and most of all an entire WHO DAT nation! How about that?

Querido Diario,

 Yo he hecho mi camino a Tikrit, Iraq. Aquí es donde nació Saddam y algunos de sus seguidores todavía creen que vive en un lugar sagrado. Este último mes ha estado sumamente ocupado. Hemos estado en la carretera constantemente. Cada vez más, nuestras tropas están saliendo del país todos los días. Es una gran experiencia ver el fin de una guerra y ver a un país unirse para dar inicio a un nuevo comienzo (bueno, al menos en algunas partes del país.) Se va a demostrar que no importa cómo se establecen las cosas y hasta donde pueden llegar, siempre se puede volver atras. Espero que todos nuestros esfuerzos aquí no hayan sido en vano. He puesto mi propia sangre, sudor y lágrimas en este país. Recuerdo que antes de que llegara alguna vez a Irak, pensé en este país como una pérdida de tiempo y no queria tener nada que ver con eso. Ahora que he pasado años aquí, ayudando y luchando por ello, he llegado a entender su belleza. Lo veo más como un amigo ahora, un amigo con un pasado duro, la mala suerte, y un corazón roto. Al igual que yo estaba allí ayudando a que volviera sobre sus pies, él también estaba allí para ayudarme. Me ha ayudado a crecer más fuerte que nunca, para ver la vida en un nivel totalmente diferente, y también me enseñó a mí a reconstruir desde adentro hacia afuera.

Cuando veo a los niños pequeños riendo y jugando, me hace sentir que hemos hecho historia aquí. Por nosotros, ellos serán la primera generación de miles de años que será capaz de forjar su propio futuro. Ellos serán capaces de vivir en un país sin opresión, y la posibilidad de vivir sus sueños pueden hacerse realidad. El desierto tiene una manera de borrar el pasado, enterrando todo en lo profundo de su arena donde se puede olvidar. Así que ya que este país nos ve llegando al final de nuestro capítulo en sus vidas, vemos comenzar un nuevo capítulo en sus vidas. Dios, gracias por bendecirme con la oportunidad de ser parte de este evento extremadamente único que ha cambiado mi vida para siempre.

Dear Journal,

I’ve made my way to Tikrit, Iraq. This is where Saddam was born and some of his followers still believe that they live in a sacred place. This past month has been extremely busy. We’ve been on the road constantly. More and more of our troops are leaving the country everyday. It’s a great experience seeing the end of a war and seeing a country pull together to start a new beginning (well, at least a few parts of the country.) It goes to show that no matter how down things can get, you can always get back up. I hope that all of our efforts here were not in vain. I’ve put my own blood, sweat and tears into this country. I remember before I ever came to Iraq, I thought of this country as a waste of time and didn’t want anything to do with it. Now that I’ve spent years here, helping it and fighting for it, I have gotten to understand its beauty. I see it as more of a friend now, a friend with a rough past, bad luck, and a broken heart. Just like I was there helping him get back on his feet, he too was there to help me. He’s helped me to grow stronger than ever, to view life on a totally different level, and he’s also taught me how to rebuild myself from the inside out.
   When I see the young children laughing and playing, it makes me feel like we have made history here. Because of us, they will be the first generation in thousands of years that will be able to shape their own future. They will be able to live in a country without oppression, and the possibility of living their dreams can become reality. The desert has a way of erasing the past, burying everything deep in its sand where it can be forgotten. So as this country sees us coming to the end of our chapter in their lives, we see them starting a new chapter in their lives. God, thank you for blessing me with the opportunity to be a part of this extremely unique event that has changed my life forever.

El 16 de septiembre del 2010, marcará la celebración del bicentenario en México.  El maravilloso país justo al sur de los Estados Unidos, va a conmemorar 200 años de independencia del dominio español y 100 años de su revolución que comenzó en 1910 y derroco al dictador Porfirio Díaz.  “El Grito” cada 16 de septiembre es la Fiesta Mexicana por excelencia.  En este día, todos los mexicanos alrededor del mundo celebrant la independencia de México. 

En México, calles, casas, edificios y automóviles están decoradas en todas partes del país. En cada esquina de la calle hay vendedores de banderas, globos, sombreros y rehiletes -  todos de verde, blanco y rojo, los colores nacionales de México. Hay banderas en prácticamente todas las casas y edificios.  Decoraciones iluminados se configuran en cada ciudad, la más espectacular siendo los del Zócalo o plaza principal, en la ciudad de México.  La plaza principal de cada ciudad es el lugar donde se realizará las grandes celebraciones del 16 de septiembre.

Alimentos siempre son una parte muy importante de estas festividades. Literariamente cientos de kioscos se configuran varios días antes y ofrecen los antojitos tradicionales,como los dulces mexicanos y ponche. 

Es costumbre que el Presidente entregue el “grito” en la plaza principal de la ciudad de México.  Es en esta plaza, en el Palacio Nacional, se coloca la campana original timbrada por Hidalgo. Se trata de la campana que es sonada cada 16 de septiembre.  La ceremonia alcanza el punto más alto cuando se une la multitud gritando orgullosamente los nombres de los héroes de la independencia, para terminar con el emocionante VIVA MEXICO!

Localmente, el consulado de México también iniciará el mes de la Herencia Hispana el 19 de septiembre, en el jardín de esculturas del City Park. Las festividades comenzarán al mediodía y continuan hasta las 4:00 pm.  Habra música, comida y artesanías. No se olvide de traer su silla porque sera una tarde llena de entretenimiento para toda la familia. Felicidades a nuestros amigos Mexicanos!

200 Years of the Mexican Independence

September 16, 2010, will mark the Bicentennial Celebrations in Mexico.  The wonderful country just south of the United States, will be commemorating 200 years of Independence from Spanish rule and 100 years of its revolution that began in 1910 and toppled dictator Porfirio Diaz.  “El Grito” every 16^th of September is the Mexican Fiesta par excellence.  On this day, Mexicans all over the world celebrate Mexico’s independence. 

In Mexico, streets, houses, buildings and cars are decorated everywhere in the country. On every street corner there are vendors selling flags, balloons, sombreros and rehiletes -shuttlecock, all with the green, white and red, the national colors of Mexico. Flags wave from practically every house and building.  Lighted decorations are set up in every city, the most spectacular being those of the Zócalo or main plaza, in Mexico City.  The main plaza of every town and city is the place where the great 16 De Septiembre celebrations take place

Food is always a very important part of these festivities too. Literarily hundreds of stands are set up several days before and offer the traditional antojitos, most aptly described as a variety of finger foods, Mexican candies, and punch. 

It is customary for the President to deliver the “grito” in Mexico City’s main plaza.  It is in this plaza, atop the National Palace, that the original bell rung by Hidalgo is placed. This is the bell that is rung every 16^th of September.  The ceremony reaches the high point when the crowd joins in proudly shouting out the names of the heroes of the Independence, to end with the exciting VIVA MÉXICO.

Locally, the Mexican Consulate will also kick off Hispanic Heritage Month on Sunday, September 19, at City Park’s Sculpture Garden. The party will begin at Noon and continue until 4:00 pm.  Music, food and handcrafts will be showcased. Don’t forget to bring your chair because you’re in for an afternoon of entertainment for the whole family! Happy Independence to our Mexican friends!

Parece que durante los últimos ocho meses los fans de los Santos de Nueva Orleans continuan en la cima del mundo gozando del título de Campeones del Super Bowl y ahora, una nueva temporada está a punto de comenzar. El jueves, 9 de septiembre, los chicos de negro y oro enfrentarán a los vikingos de Minnesota en el Superdome de Nueva Orleans a las 7: 30 pm.  Nueva Orleans ganó su primer título de la Conferencia el año pasado venciendo a Minnesota 31-28 con un gol de campo de 40 yardas por Garrett Hartley 4: 45 en tiempo extra. Los Santos pasaron a derrotar a los Colts de Indianápolis 31-17 en el Super Bowl.  “No puedo imaginarme que no este tan emocionante que la última vez que estuvimos allí,” dino el entrenador de los vikingos, Brad Childress.”Siempre es un ambiente incredible e hostil en donde jugar.”

Con la esperanza de repetir el año incredible que tuvieron el año pasado, el equipo está comprometido a raíz de su mantra que es a finalizar fuerte en todo lo que hacen. Dicen que al mantener una actitud positiva pueden alcanzar los objetivos establecidos por sí mismos — y eso es lo que está esperando la nación Who Dat.  Los Santos afirman que el año pasado que sólo se preocupaban jugar un juego a la vez, y en esta ciudad, donde supersticiones son importantes, muchos estarán de acuerdo que deben seguir la misma formula para así una vez más ganar el juego GRANDE.  Si este es el caso, pueden apostar a que Dallas, Texas tendra miles de fanáticos de los Santos de Nueva Orleans en su ciudad con la esperanza de llevar una vez más el trofeo Lombardi a casa.

Realmente va a ser una temporada interesante en Nueva Orleans.  Con la nueva plaza de Campeones, que se abrirá al público para disfrutar de eventos previos, incluyendo elementos especiales para las actuaciones de diferentes artistas, los aficionados tendrán un nuevo lugar para celebrar antes de los juegos.  También podrán escuchar los juegos en la radio en WWL (870 AM / 105.3 FM) que es la estación principal de la red de radio de los Santos, y la estación extiende la acción semanal del fútbol de los Santos en todo el sur del Golfo. Jim Henderson controla los deberes, ex-jugador de los Santos, Hokie Gajan proporciona comentarios coloridos para todos los concursos. Ex jugador de los Santos Bobby Hebert se encarga de la cobertura , hace comentario de entretiempo y es el encargado del programa “The Point After” al final de cada juego de los Santos.  WWL también cubre programas de los Santos cada semana durante la temporada regular. WFNO (830 AM) es la afiliada en español de los Santos. Marco Antonio García maneja los deberes principales, mientras que Emilio Peralta proporciona el color del comentario.

Para obtener información de la televisión, los aficionados tendrán que chequear los juegos individuales y localmente, el entrenador Sean Payton ofrecerá un nuevo enfoque al show del entrenador típico con todo lo que rodea e incluidos en el entretenimiento de los Santos de Nueva Orleans! Producida por Horizon Entertainment, el show de Sean Payton será como entretenimiento para los titulares de los aficionados con boletos de temporada y los aficionados al fútbol casual por igual. La audiencia encontrará variedad que va desde el funcionamiento interno de la franquicia para jugar el análisis. El show de Sean Payton es conducido por el entrenador Sean Payton de los Santos de Nueva Orleans y Angelena Swords como co-anfitrióna. El show de Payton Sean saldrá al aire cada sábado por la noche en WVUE, FOX 8 a las 9: 30 pm y se repite en CST los sábados a 11 pm y los domingos a las 10: 00 am.

Who Dats Want a Two Dat in 2011

It seems that for the past eight months fans of the New Orleans Saints have been on top of the world still enjoying the title of Super Bowl Champs and now, a new season is about to begin. On Thursday, September 9, the boys in black and gold will face the Minnesota Vikings in the New Orleans Superdome at 7:30pm.  New Orleans won its first conference title last year by beating Minnesota 31-28 on a 40-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley 4:45 into overtime. The Saints went on to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in the Super Bowl.  “I can’t imagine it being anymore charged than the last time we were down there,” Vikings coach Brad Childress said. “That’s always a great, hostile environment to play in.”

Hoping to repeat the incredible year they had last year, the team is committed to following their mantra which is to Finish Strong in everything that they do. They say that by keeping a positive attitude they can achieve the lofty goals they set for themselves—and that is what the Who Dat nation is hoping for.  The Saints claim that last year they would only worry about one game at a time and in this city, where superstitions are important, many will agree they should follow the same formula so once again they can win the BIG one.  If this is the case, you can bet that Dallas, Texas will be taken over by thousands of New Orleans Saints fans hoping to once again bring the Lombardi trophy home. 

It will truly be an interesting season in New Orleans.  With the new Champions Square, which will be opened for the public to enjoy pre-game events, including special elements for performances by different artists, the fans will have a new place to tailgate.  They will also be able to listen to the games on the radio at WWL (870 AM/105.3 FM) which is the flagship station of the Saints Radio Network, and the station extends the weekly action of Saints football throughout the Gulf South. Jim Henderson handles the play-by-play duties, former Saint running back and scout Hokie Gajan provides color commentary for all the contests. Former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert hosts the pregame coverage, does halftime commentary and hosts “The Point After” at the conclusion of each Saints game.  WWL also hosts Saints-specific shows during each week of the regular season. WFNO (830 AM) is the Spanish-language affiliate of the Saints. Marco Antonio Garcia handles the play-by-play duties, while Emilio Peralta provides the color commentary.

Training Camp

For television information, fans will have to check the individual games and locally, Head Coach Sean Payton will deliver a new approach to the typical coach’s show with everything surrounding and included in New Orleans Saints’ Entertainment! Produced by Horizon Entertainment, The Sean Payton Show will be entertainment for season-ticket holders and casual football fans alike. By approaching the Saints franchise using segments within each show, audiences will find variety ranging from inner workings of the franchise to play analysis. The Sean Payton Show is hosted by New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton and Co-host Angelena Swords. The Sean Payton Show will air each Saturday night on WVUE, FOX 8 at 9:30 pm and is re-aired on CST on Saturdays at 11 pm and Sundays at 10:00 am. 

Dave Dixon fue un hombre de negocios que luchó para traer un equipo de la NFL a Nueva Orleans y fue el catalizador detrás de la construcción del Superdome de Louisiana. Murió el domingo, 8 de agosto de 2010 a la edad de 87 años.

Dixon había estado enfermo desde enero, encionó su hijo, Frank Dixon.

“Él siempre llegaba con nuevas ideas y pensamientos. Hasta su muerte, él estaba pensando,”dijo Frank Dixon.

Dixon persuadió a los funcionarios de Nueva Orleans para perseguir una franquicia de fútbol, en lugar de béisbol en la década de 1960. Dave Dixon: Driving Force Behind Superdome Dies

Dave Dixon was a businessman who fought to bring an NFL team to New Orleans and was the catalyst behind construction of the Louisiana Superdome. He died on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at the age of 87.

Dixon had been ill since January, said his son, Frank Dixon.

“He was always coming up with new thoughts and ideas. Until his dying day, he was thinking,” Frank Dixon said.

Dixon persuaded New Orleans officials to pursue a football franchise rather than baseball in the 1960s. In his autobiography, “The Saints, The Superdome and the Scandal,” Dixon wrote there were strong reasons for the NFL to consider New Orleans, including its mild winter weather, a great football tradition and 80,000-seat Tulane Stadium. Dixon was a Tulane University graduate.

On November 1, 1966, Dixon’s efforts paid off when the NFL awarded its 16th franchise to New Orleans. On November 8, after Dixon had persuaded Governor John McKeithen to endorse financing of a domed stadium, New Orleans voters approved funding to construct the Superdome. Along with John W. Mecom, Dixon became a part owner of the Saints.

Frank Dixon said his father recently told him how the timing of the announcement came about. He said NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle called his father about the deal and his dad suggested they wait a week to announce it on that day.

“Both Pete Roselle and my father were great marketers,” Frank Dixon said. “I wonder where New Orleans would be today if it didn’t have the Saints and the Superdome. I don’t think that ever would have happened if my father wouldn’t have been here.”

Dixon started thinking about the stadium shortly after the city got the team.

The Superdome opened on Aug. 3, 1975. But it wasn’t until last season that the Saints, a perennial loser, brought home a Super Bowl victory to the city.

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson said in a statement that Dixon “was a distinguished civic leader with a unique vision and he was widely admired around our region as a leader who was dedicated to the development of the Louisiana Superdome.”

Dave Dixon is survived by his wife; his three sons, David Frank Dixon, John Shea Dixon and Martin Stuart Dixon and four grandchildren.
