New Orleans- el NOPD dice que imigrantes ilegales no tienen que preocuparse acerca de la deportación si ellos son víctimas de un crimen.
Karen López, dueña de un negocio en honduras está asustada de llamar a la policía porque tiene miedo de ellos. Asustada por que aun viviendo de manera legal en New Orleans teme que la policía encontrara algunos de sus familiares y amigos que son ilegales y los deportaran. Es un temor muy fuerte, esto mantiene aproximadamente 20.000 imigrantes ilegales acá por casos de crímenes reportados a la policía. Ahora, la policía tiene un plan para cambiar todo eso. El superintendente Warren Riley explica, “si una persona es víctima de un crimen, si una persona es testigo de un crimen, nuestro foco es resolver ese crimen. Nosotros no vamos a cuestionar una persona sobre eso este o no este documentada.
Pero no todas las personas están acogidas por el plan. Brian Clark residente de New Orleans dice, “No eso no es justo porque entonces ustedes casi no están reteniendo gente que rinde cuentas por sus propios actos de este modo no son justos con la gente que esta aca”.
Aun los oficiales de imigracion apuntan a que es una ley federal detener imigrantes y deportar indocumentados creando así un dilema para la policía. “como nosotros podemos estimularlos para seguir adelante, ellos han sido hurtados. Ahora nosotros vamos a apartarlos de su libertad”. Riley dice.
No Deportation for Illegal Crime Victims

New Orleans – The NOPD says illegal immigrants don’t have to worry about deportation, if they are a victim of crime.
Karen Lopez, a business owner from Honduras says she’s afraid to call the police because she’s scared of them. Scared because even though she’s living in New Orleans legally, she’s afraid the police will find that some of her friends and family are illegal immigrants and deport them. It’s a fear so strong, it’s keeping many of the roughly 20,000 illegal immigrants here from reporting crimes to the police. Now, police have a plan to change all that. Superintendent Warren Riley explains, “If a person is a victim of a crime, if a person is a witness to a crime, our focus is solving that crime. We are not going to question a person about whether they are documented or not.”
But not everyone is on board with the plan. New Orleans resident Brian Clark says, “No that’s not fair because then you almost are not holding everybody accountable for their own actions and being fair to the people that are here.”
Even immigration officials point out that it’s federal law to detain immigrants and deport the undocumented creating a dilemma for police. “How do we encourage them to come forward, they’ve been robbed. Now we’re going to take away their freedom,” Riley says.
